Real Life – Vestina’s Story: From Dressmaking to Retail…
When Vestina arrived in Australia, she brought with her years of experience as a skilled dressmaker. But without local demand for her craft or recognised qualifications, finding work in her field proved difficult. Determined to adapt, Vestina enrolled in a Retail course to gain the skills and experience needed to work in a shop environment.
While motivated, she quickly found the course challenging—especially when it came to the everyday language and expectations of Australian retail. Recognising her dedication, her tutor stepped in to offer additional support, providing her with the Teach2Learn Pre-Vocational Retail workbooks.
These resources became a turning point for Vestina.
Her tutor noticed that while Vestina could read and write well, her real-world, practical experience in a shop setting was limited. She lacked the confidence to engage comfortably with customers and was worried about making mistakes.
The practical activities in the workbooks—from handling transactions to greeting customers and understanding workplace signage—gave her a safe, structured way to build the skills that were expected of sales assistants. Through relatable, workplace-based scenarios, Vestina learned to navigate common tasks and communication challenges she might face on the job.
As she progressed, so did her confidence.
No longer held back by fear of being “shamed” for not knowing what to do, Vestina embraced her work experience placement with new energy. Her improved communication skills, customer service knowledge, and hands-on readiness led her to apply for retail jobs she once believed were out of reach.
Vestina’s story is a powerful example of how targeted, practical training can open doors to new careers—even after a lifetime in another profession. With the right support, she transformed her path and stepped into a whole new future.
