When Shane first joined the MW Learning Centre, he was facing a challenge that had held him back for years: undiagnosed dyslexia. The condition made reading incredibly difficult—letters appeared to “bleed” into each other on the page, creating a barrier between him and the learning he so desperately wanted to pursue.

But Shane had a vision. He loved computers and dreamed of starting a small computer repair business. To build the necessary skills, he began working through the Teach2Learn Pre-Vocational workbooks—starting with Business Administration, then moving into Information Technology.

With the support of his trainer, Shane discovered a simple yet powerful solution to manage his dyslexia: using blue overlays, tinted glasses, or a blue background on screens. This helped stabilise the text and allowed him to read clearly—something he hadn’t experienced in years.

As Shane gained confidence, something remarkable happened. His trainer noticed his natural ability with technology and invited him to tutor other students in basic computer skills—word processing, drawing tools, internet use. Not only did this help his peers, it reinforced his own learning and gave him a sense of purpose and pride.

Empowered by his progress, Shane applied through Centrelink for the NEIS (New Enterprise Incentive Scheme) to launch his own business. He was accepted, completed the program, and went on to run a successful computer repair business for many years.

But Shane’s story doesn’t end there.

Today, Shane and his wife have taken their experience a step further. They now provide home-schooling support for children who are unable to attend school due to social or physical challenges—teaching them the computer skills they’ll need for the future.

Shane’s journey is a powerful example of how the right tools, encouragement, and a commitment to helping others can turn a learning challenge into a lifelong strength.
