Motivation – Pete’s Story: Learning to Be the Dad…
Pete came to MW Training Consultants at age 43, determined to change his life—not for himself, but for his children. He wanted to fight for custody and knew he needed to be able to read and write to navigate the legal system, communicate with services, and be the father his boys deserved.
When Pete first joined the literacy program, he was shy, had a severe stutter, and his reading and writing skills were assessed at ACSF *Pre-Level 1—equivalent to Grade 1 in school. He had held long-term jobs in the past, often for over a decade, but they were largely unskilled. Facing redundancy and unemployment, Pete saw literacy as the key to creating a more stable future for himself and his children.
Pete attended two morning sessions a week, every week, for six months—totalling over 280 hours of dedicated learning. His progress wasn’t just academic—it was transformational. As his confidence grew, so did his ability to engage with the world around him.
Pete’s motivation was clear: he wanted to read letters from lawyers, Centrelink, and Family Services on his own. He wanted to understand what was happening in his children’s lives and have a voice in their future. More than that, he wanted to be able to read stories with his boys and share his own life through writing.
He started at the very beginning, re-learning the alphabet, reading children’s books, and practicing sentence structure. Slowly but surely, he began writing his own short stories—often about his life—so he could read them aloud to his sons. Every word he wrote and read was a step toward being present, involved, and emotionally available for his children.
Pete’s story is one of perseverance, purpose, and transformation. It’s a powerful reminder that learning is not just about education—it’s about connection, identity, and the deep desire to be part of something bigger than yourself.
