Support – Selma’s Story: Building a Culturally Inclusive Future…
Selma, a young Muslim mother new to Australia, dreamed of raising her children with a strong connection to their cultural roots—while also helping them thrive in their new home. In conversations with other mums from her community, she realised they all shared a similar challenge: finding childcare that respected their values, food traditions, language, and cultural practices, while also preparing their children for life in Australia.
Rather than waiting for a solution, Selma decided to become the solution.
She discovered that she could open a home-based family day care centre—but to do so, she needed to meet national qualification and compliance standards. Determined to succeed, she enrolled in an MW Training Consultants Literacy & Language course to improve her English skills and build the confidence needed to take the next step.
Over 12 months, Selma’s language ability flourished. With support from Teach2Learn Resources’ Pre-Vocational Childcare workbooks, she deepened her understanding of Australian terminology, workplace expectations, and regulatory frameworks related to early childhood education.
With her foundation in place, Selma progressed to a Certificate III in Children’s Services and gained hands-on experience working in local childcare centres. Her vision was now becoming a reality.
What made her journey even more powerful was the support of her community. The same group of mums who had first discussed the need for culturally inclusive childcare pledged to enrol their children with her as soon as she became qualified.
And she did.
Selma went on to successfully apply for a Family Day Care licence. With her qualifications, cultural insight, and community behind her, she launched her own business—creating a space where children could grow up understanding both their heritage and their place in Australian society.
Selma’s story is a testament to the power of purpose, education, and community. With the right support and determination, she turned a shared challenge into a thriving solution—one family at a time.
